APS - Code Zero Furling Systems

Harken Code Zero Furling

Originally built for Volvo 60s, Code Zero furlers are used with free-flying asymmetrical headsails and staysails. Suitable for boats up to 125 ft (38 m), they tame Code Zero sails, screechers, Gennakers® and staysails.

The eight-faceted sheave-drive grips line aggressively to furl these huge sails with minimal line. Its large diameter makes furling smooth and easy. The 3126, 3127, 3128 and 3115 Code Zero’s spring-loaded arms hold line captive in the sheave. Arms open to remove the line for quick unfurling, or to strike the furler. A built-in stripper safely guides line out of the furler. The lower unit incorporates a quick sail disconnect by pushing a spring-loaded button.

Compact hardened steel roller thrust bearings handle extremely high luff loads. Furler heights are kept to a minimum, so luff lengths can be at maximum length.

Since furling a Code Zero sail requires very high luff tension, a 2:1 adapter is available. This fits either the upper or the lower unit, but installation on the upper is advised to prevent halyard twisting. A snap shackle adapter allows quick disconnect.

To handle torsional load, we recommend a dual luff cord system. This system uses thimbles to loop the cords around the tack and head of the sail. Talk to your sailmaker. Code Zero furlers are not for reefing.

Karver Code Zero Furling

A furler is the ideal system to set and strike light sails. In a race utilizing multiple furlers for various sails, Karver offers the advantage of roller furling without the weight and windage of a conventional roller reefing systems. K.F. Furlers optimize sail handling with minimal weight aloft. Karver is an industry leader in this concept offering a complete range of superior products for all sailors.

An elastic impact resistant plastic cover encloses the spool. In the event of an impact it resists all permanent deformation that may restrict or interfere with the systems ability to rotate. The plastic cover avoids potential scratches and tears that may occur with a metallic covers when the mechanism is taken off or stored with the sails and sheets.

K.F. Furlers have a notch on the spool allowing fitting or removal of the loop line with out removing the line cover or dismounting the system. This eliminates the need to remove the cover and avoids the risk of loosing small parts (screws, pins…). It also keeps the mechanism closer to the deck by avoiding the necessary displacement required for removable covers and increases the available luff length by minimizing the height of the spool and tack fitting.

The swivel or upper mechanism: The loads applied to a furler are particularly high on the swivel. Karver utilizes high resistance stainless steel ball bearings to ensure smooth rotation under the most extreme loads.

All K.F. Furlers are maintenance free and protected by a special anodizing with Teflon impregnation.

Selden Code X

Selden Code X furlers are operated with an endless furling line running over a line driver. A narrow line guide fitting leads the line on to the line driver and gives a good grip. A wedge shaped line stripper separates the line when unfurling, allowing the line driver to spin freely. The furling line is usually led all the way back to the cockpit. To help handling the endless control line, Seldén has a new custom Tandem-block. This is a fiddle block with two cam cleats. As an alternative, a shorter furling line can be operated by the foredeck crew.

This system makes furling easier for the crew. The furling system is used for a Gennaker, Code 0 and Stay Sail.

Karver Code Zero Furling Options

Simple attachment systems provided for a conventional snap shackle or a 2:1 block either on top of the swivel or below the spool. H.R. Shackles and specials thimbles (aluminium or stainless steel) are also available for each furler.

A small lock can be put under the drum to stop rotation and avoid a sail unfurling at the wrong time.

Harken Screecher, Staysail & Gennaker Furlers

Spinnaker Staysail
Furled staysails are easy to hoist rolled and can be deployed or doused from the cockpit. In marginal conditions the sail can be struck instantly without changing the trim of the boat. Multiple stacked races of Torlon® ball bearings ensure smooth operation under load. Systems include a lower drum with snap shackle, fairlead and Cam-Matic® cleats, and an upper swivel with provision for halyard attachment.

Gennaker® Furling
Gennaker®® furling was developed for large single-handed boats and huge oceangoing multihulls. The 1900 Gennaker® furler is ideal for drifters and reachers on multihulls to 45 ft (14 m). Smaller boats use the 3049. The drum unit features a fairlead, while the upper swivel is designed for direct halyard attachment. Custom designs are available for larger boats.

Screecher Furling
Use screecher furling systems on multihulls to 32 ft (9.60 m) and easily driven sport boats. Perfect for jib reaching, screechers are set on the bowsprit. They are often carried upwind in light to moderate conditions and used as storm spinnakers when it’s blowing.

Systems are sized to handle loads of 2:1 halyards and multiple stacked races of Torlon® ball bearings ensure smooth rotation under load. Fairleads allow the furling line to lead aft to the cockpit.
