Splice vs. Knot
Splices enable a line to retain 90 - 95% of its maximum working load. A knot reduces working loads by more than 50%.

Brummel Splice
We use the less known Brummel Splice in 12-Strand eye splices where applicable. The splice turns the line "in-side-out" and then back on itself. This "cross-braids" the line so fibers are effectively locked and can't pull out. It takes a bit more work, but we think it's worth the effort.

Whiplocks™
Although more time consuming, all of our seizings receive a Whiplock™ at no additional charge. Whiplocks™ incorporate a locking stitch and provide a highly visible inspection point for lines. If a Whiplock™ shows broken strands or the strands are at severe angles, very likely the line was overloaded. In addition, Whiplocks™ are more durable than standard whips and help to prevent no-load movement of splices due to mishandling.

Pre-Stretching/Pre-Set
New halyards always have some initial "stretch" or "set" that needs to be worked out. To remove this, attach your halyard to a solid point, like the bow stem, load it up on a winch and let it set overnight. By the next day your halyard will be race ready.

12 Strand Eye Splice

12 Strand Eye Splice

Applies to single braids or the uncovered cores of high tech double braids. The most common type of line termination, perfect for replacing knots. We can splice in a thimble if you wish. Includes Whiplock™. This splice will consume two feet of line, so make sure you order line that is long enough.

To ensure your specific rigging needs are communicated correctly, please call us at 800-729-9767 with your requirements.

Rigging Charge: $12.00 per splice

Double Braid Eye Splice

Double Braid Eye Splice

A "Double Braid" eye splice is core-to-cover. Both the core and the cover share the load. Used for double braids like Sta Set and Trophy Braid. Use to attach a shackle, or anywhere else you need a secure replacement for a knot, e.g., at a becket. We can splice in a thimble if you wish. Let us know and we'll make the eye long for luggage tag attachment to hardware. Available for lines diameters of 1/4" or greater. Includes Whiplock™. This splice will consume two feet of line, so make sure your order your line long enough.

Hi-Tech Eye Splice

Hi-Tech Eye Splice

A "high tech" eye splice is core-to-core. The core takes all the load and the cover serves to protect the core.

Used for lines with high tech cores:
- Dyneema Cored Double Braids
- Vectran Cored Double Braids
- Blended Cored Double Braids
- Dyneema/Polypropylene Double Braids.

Paraloc Brummel Splice

Paraloc Brummel Splice Using Paraloc’s proprietary rigging technique, this splice turns the line “inside-out” and then back on itself. This “cross-braids” the line so fibers are effectively locked and can’t pull out. Due to the dense nature of Paraloc lines, this process requires a high degree of expertise and considerably more time than similar splices on other 12-Strand lines.

12 Strand 'Luggage Tag' Splice

12 Strand 'Luggage Tag' Splice

Applies to single braids (Vectrus 12, Ultrex 12 and AmSteel Blue) or the uncovered cores of strippable high tech double braids (Crystalyne, Maxibraid Plus) Basically, a large eye splice that attaches like a luggage tag to a suitcase handle. Use it to attach your halyard shackle for convenient replacement, or to securely attach a sheet directly to a sail's tack or clew, avoiding the weight of a shackle. Includes Whiplock™. This splice will consume two feet of line, so make sure your order your line long enough.

Reeving Splice

Reeving Splice

We put this 'eye splice' on the ends of your halyards to make installing them a breeze. Attach your halyard leader to the reeving splice and pull the halyard through the mast. The splice is thin, so it won't snag. For installation purposes only. Available for lines diameters of 1/4" or greater. Use the Halyard Leader for easy installation. This splice will consume one foot of line, so make sure your order your line long enough.

To ensure your specific rigging needs are communicated correctly, please call us at 800-729-9767 with your requirements.

Maxijacket Coating

Maxijacket Coating The coating that you see on single braided lines like Vectrus 12, Ultrex 12 that allows them to be used with or without a cover is maxijacket. Long used on commercial rope for firming lines to increase snag resistance, improve abrasion resistance and help keep contaminants from entering the rope. Maxijacket can increase the life of braided polyester up to eight times. Volvo, AC and large blue water racers have used coatings with great success in recent years. We offer the same coating to increase the life of your own halyards, sheets, and guys.

Application of this water based urethane coating accomplishes two things: increases line life in high wear areas and makes our splices more effective by adding a "coefficient of friction." Apply the coating to eye splices to decrease wear at the working end. Coat halyards at the point where they exit the mast and at the ends of spinnaker guys to reduce wear from the pole. Even if a line is factory coated a second coat in our rigging shop can add more line life. We offer the coating in six color choices: red, blue, green, black, yellow or clear. We usually coat two feet at the shackle eye splice and/or working end.

Spinlock RP25 Line Coating

Spinlock RP25 Line Coating What is RP25 and how does it work?
RP25 is a chemical with a low viscosity that penetrates the outer cover coating all the fibres as it goes on into the core bonding the two together. This action not only assists in preventing cover-to-core slip by 10%(critical on Spectra, Dyneema and Vectran cored ropes) but also improves resistance to both internal and external abrasion by 40%. The greatest gains are in preventing cover-to-core slip in the clutched area of a line which is often misinterpreted as stretching of the line. A number of Vendee Globe entries are racing with RP25 on the critical areas of their lines and strops where abrasion risks and cover-to-core slippage are highest, e.g.: at mast sheaves, foot blocks, clutches, genoa cars, mast exits, lazy jacks, steering cables and furling lines and report great results.

To prevent slip, RP25 needs to be applied where the clutch mechanisim contacts the line. Applying beyond the clutched area of the line does nothing to reduce slip. A two foot long application is more than enough (just make sure you know you measurements so you can locate your clutch in the middle). APS sells single applications of up to two feet each. Please note that this product takes 24 hours to dry. This will add an additional day to your rigging work. Line treated with RP25 can not be shipped before it has dried completely.

Rigging Charge: $10.20 per 2' of application.

Wire to Rope Splice

Wire to Rope Splice We offer two options for wire to rope halyards. We can finish halyards to your specifications with our prefinished wire to rope package (see the Wire-to-Rope web page), or we can build a custom halyard. One option with wire to rope halyards is to have line for cleating, clutching and winching, and wire for durabilty and low stretch. Another option is to have a short section of wire for use in a halyard lock, and line for the remaining section.

Please specify your length requirements. We can also splice a 12-strand like Ultrex and AmSteel to wire. To insure your specific rigging needs are communicated correctly, please call us at 800-729-9767 with your requirements. This splice will consume two feet of line, so make sure your order your line long enough.

Stripped Cover

Stripped Cover

The simplest way to save weight aloft is to strip the cover off your halyard. We strip the cover from the head of the sail to the point just before where it's handled to be jumped in a hoist. From that point down we leave the cover so that the halyard can be handled and cleated.

Previously, the problem with removing a cover from a high tech line was that the core was not coated for abrasion and UV resistance, and loosely woven cores increased chances of snagging. Now, to meet the demands of performance sailors, lines like Crystalyne, Maxibraid Plus and Lite Speed are manufactured with tightly woven, coated cores so that covers can be readily stripped. Please specify your length requirements.

Cover Splice on 12 Strand

Cover Splice on 12 Strand

We add a durable polyester cover like Yale's cover-only or Samson Ice to high-strength, low-stretch Ultrex 12, Amsteel or Vectrus 12 so that they can be used as halyards. Where the halyard is cleated, clutched, winched and handled, the cover protects the core from abrasion. The result is minimum weight aloft.

You may even choose to cover only the "working area" of the halyard, leaving the bitter end uncovered so there's less tail to deal with when the sail's hoisted. Please specify your length requirements.

Double Cover or Core Bulk Splice

Double Cover or Core Bulk Splice

High tech lines like Crystalyne or MaxiBraid Plus so strong they frequently enable you to downsize to a diameter too small for your clutches to hold. By adding a short section of double cover or inserting a short length of 1/8" or 5/32" line in to the core, we increase the line's outside diameter where its clutched.

Here is a common set up: you want a new headsail halyard and have a Spinlock XT series clutch or a Lewmar D2 clutch on your boat (optimized for 5/16" - 3/8" line; remember, the more surface area you provide the clutch - the larger the line diameter - the higher the holding load will be within it's line diameter range.). You currently use a 3/8" line but want to downsize to 5/16" Crystalyne. We bulk up the eight foot section where the line is in the clutch to 3/8"+/-. The rest of the line remains a light and clean running 5/16". We can even strip the working end for less weight aloft(See "Stripped Cover"). Please specify your length requirements.

Core-To-Core Bulk Splice

Core-To-Core Bulk Splice

High tech single-braid lines like Ultrex 12, Amsteel or Vectrus 12 are so strong they frequently enable you to downsize to a diameter too small for your existing clutches, even with a cover added to that section. With the Double Core Bulk Splice we take a single braid like Vectrus 12 and splice it to an all-Polyester double braid. The two lines are "overlapped" in the area that is clutched, winched, cleated and handled, so there's a thicker line right where you need it.

The length going up the mast is the strong, low stretch 12 strand, the bitter end lying in the cockpit is the inexpensive tail of polyester double braid. Please specify your length requirements. This splice will consume additional line for the core-to-core overlap (bulking), so make sure your order your line long enough.

Replacement Running Backstays

Replacement Running Backstays

A great benefit for anyone looking to lose a few pounds aloft. We splice the high strength, low-stretch, low-creep fibers of Ultrex 12 to a T-ball bail fitting and the other end to a high load sailmaker thimble, or your choice of fittings. This upgrade can effect a weight savings aloft of up to 70% compared to wire. Please specify your size and length requirements. This splice will consume two feet of line for each eye splice, so make sure your order your line long enough.

Mainsheet - Cover Splice on Center of 12 Strand

Mainsheet - Cover Splice on Center of 12 Strand

Get the strength of a High Tech core and the durability of a polyester cover. Save weight and reduce the pile of soggy mainsheet in the cockpit all in one swift move. We take Ultrex 12 or AmSteel and cover the middle with a polyester cover like Yale's Cover-Only. While beating and close reaching you handle and cleat the covered portion.

While broad reaching and running (when there is less load on the mainsheet), you hold and cleat the uncovered tail. Ask that both tails be made the same length and you can flip the mainsheet around when the active section begins to wear. Please specify your length requirements. The two cover end buries will consume one and a half feet of line each, so make sure your order your line long enough.

Main Sheet - Bridle

Main Sheet - Bridle

The perfect splice for boats with split mainsheets (Snipes, Jet14, V15). We take a length of either 5/16” or 3/8” Swiftcord or Conception and splice it to a very thin 5/32" Ultrex 12 tail. Next we brummel splice a second tail of 5/32” Ultrex 12 into the first. All splices are tapered and whipped and have very smooth transitions. This combines negligible stretch and lightweight with zero water absorption. The ends of the tails are left unspliced and long so they can be tied to the desired length. Please specify your length requirements.

Genoa & Spin Sheets - Stripped Cover

Genoa & Spin Sheets - Stripped Cover

Removing the cover from a line is an excellent way to shed unnecessary weight at the clews of your sails. Historically, the difficulty in removing a cover from most high tech lines is that the core was not coated for abrasion and UV resistance, and had looser braids, increasing chances of snagging. To meet the demands of performance sailors, lines like Crystalyne or MaxiBraid Plus are manufactured with coated cores so the covers can be readily stripped.

Genoa & Spin Sheets - Cover Splice on 12 Strand

Genoa & Spin Sheets - Cover Splice on 12 Strand

Minimizing weight at the clews is key to flying a spinnaker, particularly in light air. Because of their zero water absorption, negligible stretch, and high strength/weight ratio, Ultrex 12 and AmSteel are perfect for the job.

Both are difficult to handle right off the spool, so to solve this problem, we splice on a polyester cover like Yale's Cover-Only where the sheet is handled and cleated, leaving the line uncovered (and light) at the clews. We can also make up tapered genoa sheets in the same fashion. If your boat has afterguys or a tackline, or you are concerned about creep, we can substitute Vectrus 12. Please specify your length requirements.

Asymmetrical Spin Sheets - Bridle

Asymmetrical Spin Sheets - Bridle

Our bridle sheet system helps you get the chute around fast (key when jibing an asymmetrical spinnaker) by preventing the clew from getting stuck on the headstay. We make these up by stripping the cover from Crystalyne or MaxiBraid Plus. The uncovered ends are spliced together, leaving one line to be attached to the clew. The single tail that is tied to the clew is generally around three feet long. Please specify your length requirements.

Asymmetrical Spin Sheets - Three Part

Asymmetrical Spin Sheets - Three Part

A great method for attaching sheets to an asymmetrical spinnaker. Here we make the sheets by stripping the cover from Crystalyne or Maxibraid. The cover is left on in the areas that are cleated, winched and handled. The short piece is luggage-tagged directly to the eyes on the end of both sheets, then you can tie the ~3' tail directly to the clew of the spinnaker. This setup prevents the clew from catching during jibes.

APS Custom Jacklines

APS Custom Jacklines

Tethers and harnesses are only as good as the jack lines to which they are attached. Jack lines are often too stretchy, especially those made of webbing. Remember that jack lines are meant to keep you on the boat, not trolling in the water behind it.

Our jack lines start with 1/4" spectra line that is low stretch, abrasion resistant and has a 6600 lbs. tensile strength. We eye splice each end (one end can be shackled or luggage tagged and the other lashed and tensioned with some 1/8" spectra line - sold sep.). We then cover the entire length with tubular Polyester webbing to protect the spectra line and keep it from rolling under your feet.

Labor per jack line is $34.00. Materials (1/4" AmSteel 12 and 1" tubular webbing) are sold separately. Consider terminating your jack lines at an aft point that is a whole tether length forward of the stern to minimize the danger of falling out of the boat while tethered.
