There's no better gift to give a sailor than the gift of safety -- ask any old salt about "essential" safety gear and they'll probably respond that no sailor should ever be without a good knife. When it comes to straight up safety, we highly recommend the Myerchin or Kershaw knives. The Myerchin knives use 440 High-Carbon Stainless Steel and feature a 30/70 serrated blade (30% straight, 70% serrated) that is ready to cut through any line at a moments notice. The Kershaw knives are the perfect go-to pocket knife with their 420 High-Carbon Stainless Steel construction, solid edge retention, easy sharpening and excellent overall toughness. When it comes to safety with utility, you can't beat the Leatherman Wave or Leatherman Skeletool. Both feature Stainless Steel blades to cut through any cordage while also featuring helpful tools like pliers, screwdrivers, wire cutters, etc. The Skeletool is a "necessary tools only" design while the Wave is designed to tackle any project with 18 different tools. If you want a knife that will actually stand up to the title "rust proof", the Saver Salt is your way to go. Made with H-1 steel alloy, it literally can NOT rust. It's made of Nitrogen instead of Carbon, which is what reacts with Chloride to create rust. Serrated, it cuts well in and out of the water. The OneTouch aims to provide sailors with a powerful and easy-to-use handle that offers rapid and simple winch entry and exit. The OneTouch handle uses a plunger pin and ball mechanism similar to that employed by the quick release steering wheels in Formula 1 racing cars. To insert, simply squeeze the handle and place it into the winch. To remove, squeeze and remove it all in one motion. Both operations can be performed one-handed. The mechanism employs two pins that automatically retract into the bi-square when the handle arm is squeezed. These pins extend when the handle arm is released, and provide a secure lock preventing the handle from being inadvertently knocked out of the winch.
