More information on inflatable PFD's and Tethers:
For those who want the protection of a life jacket without the bulk. Inflatable PFD's are available in automatic and manual inflation models. Many inflatable jackets come equipped with pocketed whistles or beacons, with bright colors increase the visibility for any search and rescue party. Models with an accompanying hydrostatic inflation device will help to prevent accidental inflation due to poor conditions. U.S. Coast Guard Type V approved.
We offer premier inflatable manufacturers like Mustang Survival and Spinlock. Both offer options with and without integral harnesses for offshore sailing. For severe conditions, the optional leg straps are highly recommended to ensure the jacket stays in place.
Spinlock Inflatable PFD's & Tethers:
Spinlock PFDs are available with two different inflation systems:
- PRO sensor -This is a water sensitive activation system that uses a compressed paper capsule which dissolves when wet which then releases a spring to puncture the CO2 cylinder. The cap is designed so that only water flowing upwards through the unit will cause it to activate. Water, spray and rain running down the jacket will not cause activation. Capsule should be replaced every 3 years.
- HAMMAR Hydrostatic sensor- The Hammar inflation system is activated by water pressure and will not inflate until the cap is approximately 10cm underwater. This system is designed for use in more extreme conditions and extended offshore sailing. The benefit of the Hammar system is that the jacket cannot accidently inflate from being wet with rain and sea spray. Activator should be replaced every 5 years.
Mustang Inflatable PFD's:
You can't go wrong with an inflatable PFD from Mustang. Our number one pick is the award-winning Hydrostatic Inflatable PFD with harness. The lifejacket only inflates when submerged in 4 or more inches of water ensuring that you won't have accidental inflation due to rain or ocean spray.
