The XTR Spinlock Clutch is the latest in a long line of great products that is designed to hold line under high loads. These clutches are mainly used to hold halyards but are also used to hold tack lines, outhauls, vang lines; really anything that needs to be held but isn’t necessarily adjusted frequently.
It is designed for ‘mid to higher load rope holding’ which means it is designed for use on boats from 26-35’ range but can potentially be used on smaller or larger boats depending on the specific application.
The XTR Clutch is an improvement over their previous designs in a few key manners with some trickle down features from Spinlock’s larger jammer range. The main feature is the addition of a ‘Reactive Cam’ which means that both the cam and base move in unison allowing it to hold smaller diameter high-tech lines as well as lines with tight, high-carrier covers more effectively.
Additionally because of this technology you no longer need to have line-size specific cams or bases. This fits all sizes from 8mm and 12mm in diameter. Also, because the cam and base both move it is easier to release the line under load. Even so, we still recommend putting some tension on the line by throwing a half wrap on a winch before blowing the clutch open in order to prevent premature wear and tear on your halyards.
Another big improvement is that you do not have to remove the clutch from the deck in order to service it. The cam housing is mounted to the boat but the cam cassette (Cam Reactor Module) and handle are easily removed and replaced if necessary without having to remove the entire clutch from the boat.
Other important, more fine-print-y details are that this spinlock clutch has the same hole-mounting pattern as the XTS/XCS clutches. They are sold in a variety of colors and also offers a side-mount kit. They’re sold only in singles but can easily sit next to another XTR if more than one is needed.
