"Simple by Design" is the best way to describe the YTV PFD. It introduces Astral's Torso-Lock foam which helps to eliminate ride up, reduce bulk, weight and materials (eco-friendly) and it fits a wide range of sailors.
A primary component of the system is the ergonomic wrapping of the lower panel ins side-wings below the widest part of the rib cage which helps to lock the vest in place. The YTV is easy to don and use, is fast drying, lightweight and gives sailors great range of motion.

This is the Astral YTV Coast Guard Approved PFD, really unique in that this sits nice and low, and it uses what they call a Torso Lock design where this bottom adjustment is actually at the lowest part of your ribcage and wants to lock this vest in and keep it down. I've got the thicker panels that articulate down here. I've got a thinner panel up here. In this area, my arms and shoulders aren't really touching anything, great freedom of movement.
In terms of features, I've got adjustments here at the top. I can raise or lower the vest. I've got a universal attachment point for a knife or a whistle. I've got double storage pockets here on the side. This is an over-the-head entry. There's no zipper. Once it's on, it's just a matter of pulling these tabs on the side to customize your fit. Really comfortable vest. It sits nice and low.
The Astral YTV, sliding this off, it's that easy. I've got my ripstop nylon on the outside and a standard high-vis on the inside.
Katie takes a look at the lightweight life jacket, the YTV by Astral
“Simple by design” the YTV by Astral Life Jacket is a PFD made for life on the water. With a comfortable, lightweight construction, it’s great for dinghy sailors or buoy racers who like to wear a PFD.
Made with just what you need and nothing you don’t, it has two easy to use side straps, two small shoulder straps for an easy over the head design and two small pockets on either side.
One thing that sets it apart from other life jackets is the integrated waist belt. Typically found underneath the foam, on the YTV is integrated into the flotation with a mesh/fleecy material covering it. This doesn’t add any additional length to the vest and makes it more comfortable.
After trying on just about every Coast Guard Approved vest we have in the store, I found it was noticeably lighter than all other options. If you are looking for a lot of storage the YTV might not be for you.
The two side pockets aren’t going to fit much more than a whistle, chapstick and a small granola bar. If you’re not into putting everything you possibly can into a life jacket pocket this shouldn’t be an issue.
Overall, this Astral life jacket it’s a great PFD for anyone looking for Coast Guard Approved flotation without the bulk.
Editor Note: Although this Astral Life Jacket is Coast Guard approved, it is approved as a Type V because of its pullover design.
