- A noticeable improvement. Review by Mike
Got this to replace the main sheet cleat on a Lightning. First and most importantly, it does the job well and has not failed in any way, no jams, no problems.
The primary reason I went with this was ease of releasing under load. We'd had a few close calls and knockdowns when I couldn't get the sheet free in a big puff. It IS definitely better than a regular cam cleat for that, however it's not perfect: under pressure, you still have to give it a solid tug upwards to get it to let go. But it does have the ability to adjust the resistance, so I intend to dial that down even lower the next time it's howling.
For cleating, the primary two differences are first, you don't have to look at it at all when cleating, it can't be "out of center", so as long as you pull down, it will cleat. Second, though, it doesn't matter if you are trimming in, you still have to give it an intentional tug down to cleat it, whereas with a regular cam cleat, if you are trimming in and pulling down, it will simply cleat itself.
It's not the perfect, end-all-be-all of cleats, but I do think it's a nice step up from your average cam cleat if you've been wanting it.
